Sounds in a movie can enhance the overall feeling of a movie. Sounds can help you distinguish what type of genre the movie fits into. A comedy will have sounds that make a person feel lighthearted and happy, while sounds from a horror film will make a person feel fear and be scared. Music in a movie will have the same effect as the sounds will. In a comedy, sounds only enhance the joyful emotion a person will feel while watching the film. In a horror film, if a person decides not to look because they are scared, the sounds can still help to tell the story because they can still hear even when they cannot see what is going on.
Some examples in comedy are lighthearted conversation and laughter between characters, the upbeat music, and diegetic music in the scene. The lighthearted conversation and laughter was seen in Ted Lasso as a way to upgrade the Christmas spirit. The upbeat music was used in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel to drown out all the other sounds so the audience is not overwhelmed by the actions in the scene. It was also used to reinforce the fast pace of her working. The diegetic music was used in Ted Lasso to show that the characters could hear the Christmas carols being sung outside to make it more authentic to the audience that the characters are hearing what the audience is hearing.
Some examples in horror are crickets, footsteps, and screaming. The crickets was used in Stranger Things to build suspense. The footsteps were used to show that the character was running away from the monster. The screaming was used in Insidious to show the characters being afraid of the demon. The sounds of horror make the audience feel scared and unsafe. They can then play a part in trying to escape the event or person causing this fear.
Using screaming and footsteps in my horror movie will create a sense of fear and having to escape. Laughter and upbeat music would evoke the wrong emotions for the action happening during my movie. Suspenseful music will show the audience that something is going to happen in the movie that will be unsettling to their emotions. Whatever sounds or music that I utilize in the horror film will need to leave the audience in a sense of tension and fear, and the audience knowing that there will be no moments of laughter or light hearted action.
