What types of locations can be used in a horror film to scare or disturb the audience through the environment? There are haunted houses or hotels, abandoned houses, and cemeteries as options. Which option is best for my movie?
In The Shining directed by Stanley Kubrick, a family moves into a hotel that is closed for the winter season. They eventually start seeing ghosts and bad events that have happened previously. In The Others, the family moves into a haunted mansion and soon realize that they are hearing and seeing strange things happening in the house. Unlike in The Shining, characters in the The Others turn out to be part of the hauntings themselves. A haunted house uses things that don't really happen in reality and requires the audience to believe in the supernatural events that are occurring. It requires the audience to use their imagination rather than it relating to every day life.
In Frankenstein (1931), the movie opens in a cementary and is the first sign that there are scarier things to come in the rest of the movie. The elements in any cemetery scene are meant to depict a mood of death and despair. Cementaries are meant to be seen as dark and spooky where something bad will happen.
The Orphanage and Abandoned are both about a family that buys an abandoned house and then one of them disappears. Both movies describe a real life event that would cause a family to want to move to a secluded and deserted house. These houses, eventually, create chaos and frightening things start to happen. This creates a storyline that grabs the audiences attention.
For my movie, the abandoned house is more of what I am looking to use. I believe that using something that is more relatable with the audience will keep them more invested. An abandoned house is more believable since these types of houses can be seen in most neighborhoods. The abandoned house also gives a sense of mystery, along with horror, as to what caused the house to be abandoned or what has previously happened in the house that caused the previous residents to leave the house. This mysterious reason helps to enhance the horror of what might occur later on in the movie.
